Should I Repair or Replace My Air Conditioner?

Old Air Conditioner at a Mesa, Arizona HomeHas your air conditioner stopped working? Are you trying to make a decision to repair or replace? You are not alone.

Every year, many Phoenix area homeowners struggle with the same dilemma. Some have decided to repair, while others replace. Every situation is different.

But there are at least a few factors that remain consistent for everyone and we have listed them below.

Age of Your Air Conditioner

As the number of birthdays your air conditioner has celebrated continues to climb, so does the chance it may be more beneficial to replace it. If you are having trouble remembering when you installed your air conditioner, it may be a sign it’s time to replace.

Repair if: your air conditioner is less than 10 years old and has been regularly maintained.

Replace if: your air conditioner is over 10 years old. According to ENERGY STAR, by upgrading your aging air conditioner you could save 15-20% on your energy costs.

Frequency of Repairs

Air conditioning repairs become regular occurrences for cooling systems nearing the end of their usable life. So when you are deciding on whether to repair or replace, remember to figure in the cost of continuing repairs.

Repair if: air conditioning problems are not recurring and/or the repair is covered by warranty.

Replace if: this is only the latest problem in a continuing series of repairs. Replacing your air conditioner may cost more in the short term, but it will save you money long term.

State of Energy Bills

Almost 50% of your energy bill goes toward heating and cooling your home, according to studies by ENERGY STAR. And that number can be even larger in warm climates like the Phoenix area, especially if you have an older air conditioner.

Repair if: your energy bills are low and have remained constant over the years.

Replace if: your energy use has spiked during this and recent summers. As air conditioners near the end of their lifespan, parts wear out and they become much less efficient. So spiking energy bills could be a sign your A/C is on its last legs.
